Last updated: Mar 21 2026

Amsterdam is exceptionally pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome in most cafés, many restaurants, numerous shops, and even some museums. The Dutch have a deeply ingrained love of animals, and Amsterdam reflects this with excellent infrastructure for pet owners — from designated dog parks (hondenuitlaatplaatsen) in every neighborhood to pet-friendly public transport. The city's flat terrain and extensive network of canals, parks, and cycling paths make it ideal for dog walking. The Vondelpark, Amsterdamse Bos, and Westerpark offer varied green spaces within easy reach. Amsterdam's compact size means most errands can be done on foot or by bike with a dog in tow. For pet sitters, the city offers a high quality of life, excellent veterinary care, and a culture where bringing your dog along is the norm rather than the exception.

Pet-Friendly Parks

Vondelpark

Off-leash OK

Amsterdam's most famous park at 47 hectares in the heart of the city. Dogs are allowed off-leash in designated areas (hondenuitlaatplaatsen) marked by green signs. Multiple water features for dogs to cool off, open-air theatre, and countless café terraces. Busy on weekends but large enough to find quiet spots. Accessible from multiple entrances along the park's length.

Vondelpark, 1071 Amsterdam

Amsterdamse Bos

Off-leash OK

A massive 1,000-hectare forest park south of the city center — nearly three times the size of Central Park. Dogs can be off-leash in designated areas throughout the forest. Swimming lakes, woodland trails, open meadows, and a goat farm. Less crowded than Vondelpark and ideal for dogs that need long walks. Reachable by bus or a 20-minute bike ride from the center.

Amsterdamse Bos, 1182 Amstelveen

Westerpark

Off-leash OK

A lively park in Amsterdam-West with a designated off-leash dog area, the Westergasfabriek cultural complex, cafés, and a Sunday market. The off-leash zone is fenced and popular with local dog owners. The park connects to the Westerkanaal walking route. A great mix of urban culture and green space.

Westerpark, 1014 Amsterdam

Flevopark

Off-leash OK

A quieter park in Amsterdam-Oost with designated off-leash dog areas, a swimming pond, and relaxed atmosphere. Less touristic than Vondelpark, primarily used by local residents and their dogs. Flat walking paths through mature trees and meadows. The adjacent Distillery 't Nieuwe Diep has a dog-friendly terrace.

Local Pet Regulations

Dog Registration

All dogs in Amsterdam must be microchipped and registered in a recognized database (NDG or PetBase). Amsterdam abolished the dog tax (hondenbelasting) in 2017, so there is no annual municipal fee for dog ownership.

Leash Laws and Off-Leash Areas

Dogs must be leashed in all public spaces in Amsterdam unless in a designated off-leash area (losloopgebied or hondenuitlaatplaats). These areas are marked with green signs showing a dog silhouette. Amsterdam has over 30 designated off-leash areas spread across all neighborhoods. Fines for off-leash violations are €90.

Dog Waste

Owners must clean up after their dogs throughout Amsterdam. The city provides waste bag dispensers (hondenpoepzakjes) at parks and along busy walking routes. Fines for not picking up are €150. Amsterdam takes this seriously and enforcement is active.

Public Transport (GVB)

On GVB trams, buses, and metro, dogs travel free on a leash. Small pets in carriers also travel free. Dogs must be leashed and well-behaved on all public transport. NS trains require a dagkaart hond (€3.70) for dogs. Guide dogs travel free on all public transport.

Breed-Specific Rules

The Netherlands abolished the Regeling Agressieve Dieren (RAD) breed ban in 2009. There is no national or municipal breed-specific ban in Amsterdam. However, any dog that displays dangerous behavior may be assessed by authorities and subject to restrictions or seizure. Enforcement is complaint-driven.
