Local Pet Regulations

Leash Laws in Urban Areas

Dogs must be kept on a leash in all public areas within Malmö, including streets, parks, and public squares. Off-leash exercise is only allowed in designated hundrastgårdar (dog exercise yards). The leash requirement applies year-round in built-up areas.

Seasonal Wildlife Protection

Between March 1 and August 20, all dogs in Sweden must be kept on a leash in nature areas, forests, and open countryside. This nationwide rule protects wildlife during the breeding season. Violations can result in fines from the local police.

Public Transport (Skånetrafiken)

Dogs ride free on Skånetrafiken buses and trains within the Malmö region. Dogs must be leashed and kept on the floor. Small pets in closed carriers also travel free. On cross-border Öresund trains to Copenhagen, larger dogs may require a child ticket for the Danish segment.

Dog Waste Cleanup

Owners must immediately clean up after their dogs in all public spaces. Malmö provides waste bag dispensers throughout parks and along walking routes. Fines apply for failure to clean up. The city is well-maintained and expectations for cleanliness are high.

Microchipping and Registration

All dogs in Sweden must be microchipped and registered with the Swedish Board of Agriculture by four months of age. Dogs must wear a collar or harness with the owner's contact information when in public. Unregistered dogs may be seized.
