Odense is Denmark's third-largest city, located on the island of Funen with a population of around 211,000. Known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, it has a fairytale charm that extends to its green spaces and pet-friendly culture. The city offers multiple fenced hundelegepladser (dog parks) and hundeskove (dog forests), including the popular Hedvigslundskoven — a 3-hectare fenced dog forest with old woodland and open fields. Odense's compact center is easily walkable, and the Odense River runs through the city with pleasant waterside paths. The surrounding Funen countryside provides rolling hills, manor house gardens, and coastal trails. Public transport via FynBus allows leashed dogs on all services.

Local Pet Regulations
General Leash Requirements
All dogs must be kept on a short, controlled leash in public places including streets, parks, and forests. Off-leash exercise is only allowed in designated hundelegepladser and hundeskove. The leash must be able to be shortened — extendable leashes must be kept retracted. Owners must maintain control at all times.

Seasonal Beach Rules
From April 1 to September 30, dogs must be leashed on all beaches. From October 1 to March 31, dogs may be off-leash on beaches if under effective control. This applies to all beaches in the Odense and wider Funen area.
Registration and Microchipping
Dogs must be microchipped or ear-tattooed and registered in the Danish Dog Register before eight weeks of age. A collar with the owner's name and address is required from four months of age. Owners must keep registration details current when moving or changing ownership.
Dog Waste Cleanup
Dog owners must clean up after their dogs in all public areas. Waste bag dispensers are provided in most parks and along popular walking routes in Odense. Non-compliance may result in fines. The city maintains high cleanliness standards.
