Local Pet Regulations
Dog Licensing
All dogs in Ann Arbor must be licensed through the City of Ann Arbor Clerk's Office. Licenses require proof of current rabies vaccination and cost $6 for altered dogs and $12 for unaltered dogs annually (3-year licenses also available).
Leash Laws
Ann Arbor requires all dogs to be on a leash no longer than six feet in public areas except in designated off-leash parks. The city has three official off-leash dog parks where dogs may run freely within fenced boundaries.
Dog Waste Ordinance
Ann Arbor requires pet owners to immediately clean up after their dogs in all public spaces including parks, sidewalks, and trails. Violations can result in fines. The city provides waste bag stations at most parks and along popular walking routes.
Pet Limit
Ann Arbor limits households to three dogs and three cats without a special permit. Additional animals require approval from the city. Violations can result in fines and required rehoming of excess animals.
