Dog and Cat Licensing
East Baton Rouge Parish requires all dogs and cats over four months old to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. Licenses are obtained through the parish animal control division. Altered pets receive lower license fees. Tags must be displayed on the animal's collar at all times.

Leash Laws
Dogs must be on a leash and under the owner's control in all public areas within East Baton Rouge Parish, except in designated off-leash dog parks. Violations carry fines starting at $50. Animals found running at large are subject to impoundment by East Baton Rouge Animal Control.

Dangerous Animal Ordinance
East Baton Rouge Parish classifies animals as dangerous based on individual behavior, not breed. Owners of dangerous animals must maintain $100,000 in liability insurance, keep the animal in a secure enclosure, and use a muzzle and leash in public. The parish does not have breed-specific legislation.
Hurricane Preparedness
Baton Rouge requires pet owners to include animals in their hurricane evacuation plans. The Red Cross shelter at the Raising Cane's River Center and other parish emergency shelters coordinate with local animal welfare organizations to provide pet-friendly sheltering during mandatory evacuations.
