Local Pet Regulations

Dog Licensing

All dogs over six months old in Des Moines must be licensed annually through the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Licenses cost $15 for altered dogs and $35 for unaltered dogs. Proof of rabies vaccination is required. Tags must be worn at all times when off the owner's property.

Leash Laws

Dogs must be kept on a leash and under the owner's control in all public areas within Des Moines, except in designated off-leash dog parks. Violations carry fines starting at $50. Dogs found running at large may be impounded by the Animal Rescue League.

Dog Waste Ordinance
