Local Pet Regulations

Dog Licensing

Dane County requires all dogs over 5 months to be licensed annually with proof of rabies vaccination. Licenses are available through the Dane County Treasurer's office. Fees are lower for spayed/neutered dogs.

Leash Law

Madison requires dogs to be on a leash in all public areas except designated dog exercise areas. The city maintains 9 off-leash dog parks. Leash length must not exceed 6 feet in public areas.

Breed-Neutral Policy

Madison does not have breed-specific legislation, consistent with Wisconsin state law that prohibits municipal breed bans. All dogs are regulated based on individual behavior.

Parks and Beaches

Dogs are allowed in most Madison parks but prohibited from designated swimming beaches (including James Madison Park and B.B. Clarke beaches) between May 1 and September 30. Dog exercise areas have separate rules allowing off-leash activity.
