Local Pet Regulations

Dog Licensing

Pierce County requires all dogs and cats to be licensed with proof of current rabies vaccination. Licenses must be renewed annually. Unaltered animal fees are higher to encourage spay/neuter.

Leash Law

Tacoma requires dogs to be on a leash or under physical control in all public areas except designated off-leash parks. Dogs found at large may be impounded by Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society.

Dangerous Dog Law

Tacoma follows Washington state's dangerous dog laws. Dogs are classified based on behavior, not breed. Owners of dangerous dogs must maintain secure enclosures, carry liability insurance, and use a muzzle in public.

Waste Cleanup

Tacoma requires immediate cleanup of pet waste in all public areas. The city provides waste bag stations in most parks. Metro Parks Tacoma actively enforces cleanup requirements in its parks.
