Last updated: Mar 24 2026

Krakow is a compact, walkable city with a thriving pet culture and easy access to some of Poland's most spectacular natural landscapes. The city's Planty Park encircles the entire Old Town, providing a continuous green walking route right in the heart of the city. The Vistula River runs through Krakow with wide, flat paths along its banks — perfect for long dog walks. Kraków has a growing network of dedicated dog parks (wybiegi dla psów) and an increasingly pet-friendly café scene. The city's proximity to the Tatra Mountains (two hours south) and the Ojców National Park (30 minutes north) makes it ideal for pet sitters who enjoy outdoor adventures. Veterinary care is excellent and extremely affordable.

Planty Park

Leash required

A 4-kilometer green belt encircling Krakow's entire Old Town, created on the site of the former city walls. Shaded paths, benches, and flower gardens make it a perfect daily walking circuit. Błonia Krakowskie

Leash required

A vast 48-hectare open meadow in the heart of Krakow — one of the largest urban green spaces in Europe. While technically dogs should be leashed, the open space is widely used for off-leash exercise, especially early mornings. Views of Wawel Castle and the Kościuszko Mound make this a uniquely scenic walking spot.

Błonia, 30-068 Kraków

Vistula River Boulevards (Bulwary Wiślane)

Leash required

Flat, paved paths stretch along the Vistula River through the city center, passing under Wawel Castle and connecting to wider green areas downstream. Popular with joggers, cyclists, and dog walkers. The southern bank near Podgórze has quieter stretches with grass areas where dogs can relax.

Local Pet Regulations

Dog Registration

Krakow requires dog owners to register their pets with the municipal office. Registration is free. The city maintains a database of registered animals and encourages microchipping for all dogs.

Leash Requirements

Dogs must be kept on a leash in all public spaces in Krakow, including parks, streets, and squares. Breeds on the municipal aggressive breeds list must additionally be muzzled. Off-leash exercise is only permitted in designated dog runs.

Dog Waste

Owners are required to clean up after their dogs. Krakow provides waste bag dispensers in parks and near dog runs. Fines for failing to clean up can reach PLN 500 (approximately €115).

Public Transport (MPK Kraków)

Small pets in carriers travel free on Krakow's trams and buses. Larger dogs must be muzzled and leashed and travel free. Only one large animal per passenger is permitted. Pets are not allowed on seats.

Old Town Restrictions

Dogs are allowed in the Old Town (Stare Miasto) on leash. However, the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) can be crowded, especially during tourist season and festivals. Some historic churches and museums prohibit animals except guide dogs.
