Last updated: Mar 24 2026

Prague is consistently ranked among the most dog-friendly cities in Europe. The Czech capital has deeply embedded pet culture — dogs are welcome in the vast majority of restaurants, pubs, and cafés, both on terraces and indoors. The city has over 100 designated off-leash dog parks (psí louky) across its 22 districts, and the Vltava River provides scenic walking corridors through the city center. Prague's historic parks, including Stromovka and Letná, are popular daily walking destinations. The city requires all dogs to be microchipped and registered, with an annual dog tax. Public transport is pet-friendly, with small dogs riding free and larger dogs at half fare. For pet sitters, Prague offers exceptional quality of life — affordable living, world-class architecture, and a culture that genuinely loves dogs.

Pet-Friendly Parks

Stromovka (Royal Game Reserve)

Off-leash OK

Prague's largest inner-city park at 95 hectares, originally a royal hunting ground. Wide paths through mature woodland, open meadows, and a pond. Multiple designated off-leash areas. Extremely popular with dog owners — weekday mornings are quieter. Accessible via tram to Výstaviště or Letenské náměstí.

Stromovka, 170 00 Praha 7

Letná Park (Letenské sady)

Off-leash OK

A hillside park above the Vltava River with panoramic views of Prague's historic center and bridges. Beer garden, wide paths, and several designated dog areas. The long promenade is perfect for scenic walks. Connects via paths to Stromovka for extended routes. Accessible via tram to Letenské náměstí.

Letenské sady, 170 00 Praha 7

Riegrovy sady

Off-leash OK

A popular park in the Vinohrady district with stunning views of Prague Castle. Features a beer garden, playground, and a well-used off-leash dog area on the lower slopes. Central location makes it a favorite for after-work dog walks. The park connects to the Žižkov television tower area for longer routes.

Riegrovy sady, 120 00 Praha 2

Divoká Šárka

Off-leash OK

A dramatic natural valley on Prague's western edge — rocky gorges, forests, swimming areas, and hiking trails stretching several kilometers. Dogs can run off-leash on most trails away from the swimming areas. Feels like countryside within the city limits. Accessible via tram 20/26 to Divoká Šárka terminus.

Local Pet Regulations

Mandatory Microchipping and Registration

Prague requires all dogs to be microchipped and registered with the city district office (úřad městské části). Registration must be done within 15 days of acquiring a dog or moving to Prague. An annual dog tax (poplatek ze psů) applies: CZK 300–1,500 depending on the district, apartment vs house, and number of dogs.

Leash Laws and Off-Leash Areas

Dogs must be leashed on streets, in public transport, and in parks unless in a designated off-leash area (psí louka). Prague has over 100 designated psí louky — fenced and unfenced areas marked with signage. Fines for off-leash violations in restricted areas start at CZK 1,000.

Dog Waste

Owners must clean up after their dogs throughout Prague. The city provides waste bag dispensers (sáčky na psí exkrementy) at many locations. Fines for non-compliance range from CZK 1,000 to CZK 10,000.

Public Transport (DPP Prague)

Small pets in carriers ride free on Prague metro, trams, and buses. Larger dogs must be muzzled and leashed and require a half-fare ticket (CZK 20 for 90 minutes). Only one large dog per passenger. Avoid peak hours with larger dogs. Guide dogs travel free without restrictions.

Restaurant and Café Access

There is no citywide law prohibiting dogs in restaurants — it is at the establishment's discretion. In practice, the vast majority of Prague restaurants, pubs, and cafés welcome dogs both on terraces and indoors. Many provide water bowls. This is deeply embedded in Czech culture and one of Prague's greatest pet-friendly features.
