Local Pet Regulations
Leash Law
Miami-Dade County requires all dogs to be on a leash when off the owner's property unless in a designated off-leash area. The county has a history of strict enforcement. Fines for off-leash violations start at $50 and increase for repeat offenses.
Breed-Specific Legislation (Repealed)
Miami-Dade County's longstanding pit bull ban was repealed effective October 1, 2023 when Florida Senate Bill 942 became state law, preempting all local breed-specific legislation. Pit bulls and pit bull mixes are now legal to own throughout Miami-Dade County. All dogs are subject to the same behavior-based dangerous dog regulations regardless of breed.
