Local Pet Regulations

Leash Law

Wake County requires dogs to be on a leash or under voice control in all public areas except designated off-leash parks. Raleigh enforces a strict leash requirement on all greenways. Violations can result in fines up to $50.

Pet Registration

Wake County requires all dogs and cats over 4 months to be licensed. Fees are $10 for spayed/neutered pets and $30 for intact animals. Proof of rabies vaccination is mandatory. Registration can be completed at the Wake County Animal Center.

Waste Removal

Pet owners must immediately clean up after their animals on all public property, greenways, and parks. Raleigh provides waste bag dispensers along major greenways. Non-compliance can result in fines.

Pet Limit

The City of Raleigh limits residential households to 3 dogs over 6 months of age. Additional pets require a special permit. This applies to owned pets and animals under temporary care.
