Golden Gate Park Dog Play Areas

Golden Gate Park has four designated off-leash areas spread throughout its 1,017 acres. The Southeast section near Stanyan Street and the North Ridge area near Fulton Street are the most popular. Leashed dogs are welcome on paths throughout the rest of the park.

Local Pet Regulations

Leash Law and Off-Leash Areas

San Francisco requires dogs to be on leash on city property unless in a designated off-leash area. The city maintains over 30 off-leash dog play areas. GGNRA (federal) lands have their own regulations with some off-leash areas at Fort Funston, Crissy Field, and Ocean Beach.

Dog Licensing

San Francisco requires all dogs over 4 months to be licensed annually. Altered dog licenses cost approximately $15, unaltered cost approximately $38. Licenses are available through SF Animal Care and Control. A license discount is offered for dogs adopted from SF ACC.

Mandatory Spay/Neuter for Pit Bull Types

San Francisco requires all pit bull type dogs over 8 weeks of age to be spayed or neutered. Owners of intact pit bulls may face fines and mandatory compliance. The city does not ban any breed but has this specific requirement for pit bull types.

Professional Dog Walker Permit

Commercial dog walkers in San Francisco must obtain a permit from Animal Care and Control. Permits limit walkers to 8 dogs maximum. Walkers must carry proof of commercial liability insurance and are subject to additional regulations in GGNRA areas.
