Off-leash OK

A large off-leash dog park within Hellyer County Park featuring over an acre of fenced play area with separate sections for large and small dogs. The surrounding park has paved trails along Coyote Creek and picnic areas. One of the best-maintained dog parks in the South Bay.

Los Gatos Creek Trail

A scenic paved trail stretching over 9 miles from downtown San Jose to Los Gatos. Dogs must be leashed but the tree-lined path along the creek is excellent for daily walks and jogging. Passes through Vasona Lake County Park and several neighborhoods.

Local Pet Regulations

Leash Law

San Jose requires dogs to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet when on public property unless in a designated off-leash area. The city maintains multiple fenced dog parks. Fines for off-leash violations start at $100.

Dog Licensing

Santa Clara County requires all dogs over 4 months of age to be licensed. Annual fees are $20 for altered dogs and $70 for unaltered dogs. A lifetime license option is available for microchipped, altered dogs. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.

Spay/Neuter Ordinance

San Jose requires all dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age unless the owner obtains an intact animal permit. Exemptions apply to show animals, service dogs, and animals with veterinary health exemptions.

Pet Limit

San Jose limits households to 4 dogs and 4 cats (or a combination totaling 6). Residents who wish to keep additional animals may apply for a hobbyist permit. The regulation is enforced primarily through neighbor complaints.
