Local Pet Regulations

Leash Law

Savannah requires all dogs to be on a leash when on public property unless in a designated off-leash area. Dogs must be under the owner's control at all times in the Historic District. The city's squares are popular for leashed dog walking but dogs must remain on paths.

Dog Licensing

Chatham County requires all dogs and cats to be registered. Registration fees are $10 for altered animals and $25 for unaltered. Proof of rabies vaccination is required. Registration can be completed through Chatham County Animal Services.

Historic District Etiquette

While dogs are welcome in Savannah's Historic District, owners must clean up immediately after their pets. Dogs are not permitted inside historic buildings, museums, or churches unless specifically invited. Many carriage tours and walking tours now welcome leashed dogs.

Restaurant Pet Policy

Savannah allows dogs on restaurant outdoor patios and in outdoor dining areas at the restaurant's discretion. Many restaurants in the Historic District actively welcome dogs with water bowls and treats. Dogs are not permitted in indoor dining areas per Georgia health code.
