Local Pet Regulations

Dog Licensing

Delaware requires all dogs over 6 months to be licensed annually through the Delaware Department of Agriculture. Altered dog licenses cost $5.75, unaltered cost $25.75. A lifetime license option is available. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.

Leash Law

Wilmington requires dogs to be on a leash when off private property. Dogs running at large may be impounded by animal control. Fines for violations start at $25 and increase for repeat offenses. Owners are liable for any damage caused by their dogs.

Rabies Vaccination

Delaware requires rabies vaccination for all dogs, cats, and ferrets over 6 months of age. Vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. New Castle County periodically offers low-cost vaccination clinics.

New Castle County Parks Rules

Dogs in New Castle County parks must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet unless in a designated off-leash area. Dogs are not allowed on athletic fields, in playgrounds, or in swimming areas. Owners must clean up after their pets.
